Arnside Art Group – Exhibition Rules
Purpose. The exhibition is for all members who attend the group meetings regularly (see footnote). It provides an opportunity for members to displaytheir work and to sell paintings. It is hoped that all members will contribute paintings.
The exhibition is also an opportunity to introduce the club and its various activities to the wider community.
Involvement. The success of the exhibition is dependent upon all members of the art group being involved in its delivery. Volunteers are needed as Hanging Committee members (see appendix 1), act as stewards, record sales, serve drinks and cakes, and build / dismantle the exhibition. The funds raised from the exhibition go towards the running costs of the group for the year, and thus help all members.
Arrangements for hanging the exhibition
1. Building the exhibition. We need people who are able to help with this, to be at the Village Hall at 12.00am on the hanging day.
2. All paintings for the exhibition must be brought to the Village Hall no later than 3.00pm on the hanging day, unless special provision has been made with the committee. At 3.00pm we will hold the draw to allocate hanging spaces. All paintings will be allocated and displayed with a number.
Please note. The space a member draws out, is an initial allocation, it is not owned for the duration of the exhibition. If paintings are sold, the Hanging Committee (see appendix 1) has responsibility for choosing and replacing the painting, unless delegated. See points 4 & 5 below.
3. Large paintings for the stage area will be identified by the Hanging Committee.
4. Members may bring up to 5 extra paintings to be held in reserve to replace sold paintings. These can only be hung by the Hanging Committee as the need arises, and may not be the paintings of the member initially allocated the space.
5. The Hanging Committee can rearrange pictures to display them to best effect, add or remove paintings from the display.
The Paintings
1. Must be the member’s own work. No copies please.
2. May include paintings exhibited before, but not from the previous year.
3. Pictures done on a computer may be exhibited, but must be labelled as such.
4. Paintings completed at a workshop, should be labelled as such.
5. May include one Not for Sale (NFS) painting per member.
Pricing
The price a member asks for a painting should be reasonable, representing good value for the buyer, but not so cheap as to demean the exhibition or the art group. The price of a painting needs to represent the work put into it.
Framed paintings must have a minimum price of £30
Browser box paintings must have a minimum price of £10
For each sale the Art Group will take 10% of the price as commission.
Preparing paintings for exhibition
Members must ensure that all framed paintings have –
1. A label detailing the artists name, painting title, medium and price must be securely attached to the back of the painting. These will be available at our regular weekly sessions, and must be completed and attached prior to bringing the painting.
2. An exhibition label (collection on entry) giving the same information as above must be filled in by the artist for each painting using black ink and printed. This label is to be displayed below the front bottom right corner, on the display panel. The label should be completed and mounted as the painting is hung.
3. The frames of paintings being hung, must be fitted with eyelets and taut string, approximately two thirds the way up the painting.
4. The backs should be sealed with tape.
5. No clip frames can be used.
6. If box canvases are used, they must be fitted as in point 3.
7. Paintings that don’t conform to the above requirements will not be hung.
Browser box paintings
1. Members can submit up to 5 browser box paintings
2. Browser box paintings and those held in reserve will be allocated a number,
3. Each must be mounted and wrapped in clear cellophane. They must be labelled (on the back of the cellophane) as with the framed paintings. Cellophane will be available at our regular weekly meetings.
4. Members can leave browser box paintings in reserve.
Closing the exhibition
1. The public will be excluded from the exhibition from 4.00pm except to collect reserved paintings.
2. On exhibition closing day all members and helpers are welcome to the exhibition for refreshments from 4.15pm onwards
3. No painting can be removed from the exhibition before 4.30pm, but should be removed as soon as possible after this time.
4. Volunteers will be needed to dismantle the exhibition and clear the hall.
